Travel Tips For The Big Bend

(Marfa Chamber Of Commerce)

When driving through West Texas, there is one rule of thumb: BE PREPARED. Long distances, winding roads and inclement weather can put the traveler in uncomfortable and sometimes difficult situations. A few travel tips for the uninitiated might include:

  • Have extra water available.

  • Be sure your spare tire is in good repair.

  • Have a small tool kit and first aid kit.

  • Don't let your gas tank get too low, there can be long distances between gas stations.

  • A cell phone is a good idea, however be aware that service can be spotty.

  • Always let someone know where you are going.

For health and safety concerns when walking, hiking or extended exposure to the elements:

  • Have a wide brim hat for protection against West Texas sunshine.

  • Bring water, sunscreen and lip moisturizer.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: snakes, mountain lions and various other animals are not necessarily friendly.

  • Make sure you have ample prescription drugs.

  • Do not cross into private property without permission.
